Government Spokesman – direct talks – Working Groups
"The President of the Republic has not made
any declaration for the start of direct negotiations", the Government
Spokesman Mr Stefanos Stefanou stated yesterday, adding that the
President made it clear that in the final analysis everything will
depend on the assessment of the work of the Working Groups that will
take place on 25th July. Mr Stefanou made the above statement replying
to a question concerning reactions to the press conference of President
Christofias.
Replying to another question Mr Stefanou stressed that the Working
Groups do not aim to solve the Cyprus problem. "It is not the first
time that we said that not everything will be agreed in the Working
Groups. I think that we were adequately clear on this, right from the
start," he said and noted that the aim of the Working Groups was to
prepare the ground just as the process agreed on 21st March and the
spirit of the 8th July Agreement. Asked on the issue of the basis of
the talks, the Government Spokesman referred to the statement of the
President of the Republic that the basis of the talks has been
clarified. "In the decisions that will be taken all the facts will be
taken into account. This will be the objective of the deliberations of
the President of the Republic with the political parties, as provided
by the last press release of the National Council and the President
will act accordingly", he concluded.
