Government Spokesman – ECHR rulings on Demades and Tymvios
cases
The Government Spokesman Mr Stefanos Stefanou,
commenting yesterday on the decisions by the European Court of Human Rights
(ECHR) in two cases – Ioannis Demades and Mike Tymvios, respectively – of Greek
Cypriot property in the Turkish occupied areas, made the following statement:
"In Demades' case, the ECHR vindicated the plaintiff by awarding him a
compensation for deprivation of property use. The plaintiff upholds his
property. In this sense, the ECHR's decision is in the right direction. It is
noted that the amount awarded was the one estimated by the plaintiff's
specialists. In Tymvios' case, the ECHR recognised the friendly settlement that
he forged with Turkey, striking off the case from the Court's list. The
Government, in cooperation with its legal adviser – the Attorney General, will
study in depth all the aspects of the decision and should anything in this
judgment clash with the legislation or contradict the interests of the Republic
of Cyprus, it will defend them."
