At the beginning of his meeting with the press, on
Friday, 30 May, the Government Spokesman, Mr St. Stefanou made the following
statement: "The Turkish Cypriot leader Mr Talat often complains and raises the
issue of statements that do not assist, as he supports, him, the building of
trust between the two communities, or the efforts for a solution. At the same
time, however, he does not resist the temptation to express unacceptable
positions on core issues of the Cyprus problem and making statements that do not
serve the purpose of building trust. He repeated such unacceptable positions in
his interview on Euronews, like for example the non existence of colonists, the
existence of two peoples in Cyprus and a new partnership between two states. Do
these positions assist the process, or the building of trust? Of course not! We
will continue to avoid playing the blame-game, because we really want to seek a
good climate between the two communities, a climate which will help the efforts
for solving the Cyprus problem. We will continue to support a solution based on
principles which will reunite Cyprus and its people, within the framework of a
bizonal, bicommunal federation".
