“Bearing in mind that we are in a process of negotiations, in our opinion and with all due respect to the ECHR, the Court should have been more careful”, the Government Spokesman Mr Stefanos Stefanou stated yesterday. In statements to the press and invited to comment on information on the possibility of an international conference on the Cyprus problem with the participation of the EU and the two communities, Mr Stefanou said: "it is just information. There is nothing before us, and we have not been told
anything because I heard that the Foreign Minister of Spain Mr Moratinos, who will be accompanying his country’s Queen during her visit here, will raise this issue with the President of the Republic. We do not have anything before us. Besides the conference issue is not on the agenda. We, the two communities are conducting negotiations and are trying to find a solution to the Cyprus problem. So, at the moment, there is nothing to be said”. Asked whether the issue will be rejected if it is raised with the President
of the Republic, Mr Stefanou said: “Do not forget that it was our firm position, particularly since the 80s, when the issue started about an international conference in which the Permanent Members of the UN Security Council would be participating. We believe that there can be no discussions that are not on the agenda when we are having negotiations. We concentrate on the negotiations and at the moment this is what is before us, this is what we are handling and as the President of the Republic stated again yesterday
we come to the negotiations with good will, with dedication to principles and with the necessary realism in order to open the way for the solution of the Cyprus problem; nothing more and nothing less”. - 09.03.2010
