President Christofias: the message of the sacrifice of Misiaoulis and Kavazoglou is a call for the mutual respect and reconciliation of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots

“The solution does not depend on us only. It depends firstly and primarily on Turkey, which has not allowed the achievement of a solution, so far, due to its stance. Turkey must change its stance, must stop its communication tactics and practically work, on the basis of UN resolutions, for a solution to the Cyprus problem,” the President of the Republic Mr Demetris Christofias stated yesterday, speaking at the memorial service for Dervis Kavazoglou and Costas Misiaoulis, who advocated friendship and cooperation between the two communities in Cyprus and who were murdered by a Turkish Cypriot terrorist organization. President Christofias noted that the message of the sacrifice of Misiaoulis and Kavazoglou is a call for the mutual respect and reconciliation of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, an invitation to all to acknowledge the differences but also all the common values that the two communities shared for centuries through their harmonic coexistence. President Christofias called on Turkey to apologize with deeds to the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots, whom it has harmed through the Turkish invasion and occupation and continues to harm for the past 36 years by keeping their country divided, by violating the independence, territorial integrity of Cyprus as well as the human rights and the fundamental freedoms of its people. The so-called isolation of the Turkish Cypriots, which Turkey continuously cites, is the product of occupation, he said. The solution, he added, must be by the Cypriots and not by foreigners and must be the result of negotiations between the two Cypriot communities and not an imposition from outside factors, through arbitration processes and artificial deadlines. - 12.04.2010
