I want to believe that the same line will be redefined by the National Council and that finally, united, we will face the difficulties ahead”, the President of the Republic Mr Demetris Christofias stated yesterday.
In statements to the press, on the sidelines of the event “Sports for all,” organized by the Cyprus Sport Organization, the President of the Republic, asked whether there will be more difficulties as regards the efforts for a solution to the Cyprus problem if Rauf Denktash is included by Dervis Eroglu in his negotiating team, said: “Firstly, these two people share the same ideas, and this is known. From there on it is unwise to talk based on suppositions. We have our policy. As President of the Republic and as negotiator I want to believe that the same line will be redefined by the National Council and that finally, united, we will face the difficulties ahead. It is clear that we will have difficulties but I do not want to prejudge anything”.
President Christofias added: “I will meet with Mr Eroglu, we will see what he wants to say, what he will say to the United Nations and from then on we will act accordingly. We have already been taking some preventive measures, by talking with the UN Secretary General and sending a letter to the European Union and the United Nations. We must not be loose tongued. Actions matter and we are in favour of actions and not slogans and many words”.
Asked if there is any information on behalf of the UN as to when the direct talks will resume, President Christofias said: “the United Nations are having consultations. Alexander Downer will go to the United Nations, which has already made its statement, it satisfies us and we are waiting by the phone, more than ready for the meeting with Mr Eroglu at the negotiating table, under the United Nations auspices, as always”.
