Statements by the Foreign Minister
The Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Markos
Kyprianou, in reply to a press question whether our side should revise
its stance towards Turkey's EU prospects, if Turkey maintained its
intransigent stance, made yesterday the following statement:
"We must not forget, first of all, that Turkey has EU prospects with
Cyprus' consent; because sometimes this is forgotten, especially by our
partners in the EU. Since 2004, Cyprus continues to accept Turkey's EU
course, but, however, we have not seen any move of good will,
whatsoever, from the Turkish side, either towards the Republic of
Cyprus bilaterally, or towards its obligations within the EU that
concern Cyprus.
Now we are entering a crucial phase, which is the resumption of direct
negotiations. We expect that, at least in this case, Turkey will
support these talks, not verbally but substantially, as provided by the
EU decisions. This is Turkey's obligation and it is relevant to its EU
course. We did not connect it ourselves; the EU connected it".
