PACE approves Resolution on the situation in Cyprus
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council
of Europe (PACE) welcomes the resumption of fully-fledged negotiations
between the President of the Republic Mr Demetris Christofias and the
Turkish Cypriot leader Mr Mehmet Ali Talat, in a resolution [Resolution
1628 (2008)] approved after the 1 October Assembly debate on the report
of the rapporteur on the Situation in Cyprus, Mr Joachim Hörster.
Within the framework of the debate, the Assembly approved 9 out of the
34 amendments that were submitted on the draft resolution that was
included in Mr Hörster's report. An amendment put forward by the
rapporteur himself orally was also approved. The amended resolution was
approved by 99 votes in favour, 20 against and 7 abstentions.
With its resolution, the Assembly commends the political will and
determination shown by the leaders of the two Cypriot communities, and
fully endorses their efforts. PACE also calls upon Turkey to "respect
United Nations Security Council Resolutions on Cyprus and contribute to
creating a more constructive climate in the negotiations by reducing,
as a confidence-building measure, its military presence in the occupied
part of Cyprus".
