President Christofias invited to visit Sweden - Syrian Vice
Minister of Foreign Affairs to visit Cyprus
The Swedish Prime Minister extended an invitation to the
President of the Republic Mr Demetris Christofias to pay an official visit to
Sweden. The invitation was conveyed by the Swedish Ambassador in Cyprus, who had
a meeting with President Christofias yesterday. In statements before his
departure for Athens, President Christofias said that it was pleasing that the
Swedish Prime Minister has invited the President of the Republic of Cyprus. "I
note that very soon Sweden will be part of the EU Troika and will concern itself
with us as well", he said, noting that "we of course, want to pursue talks on
all levels with the Government of Sweden, which has traditionally been
supporting Cyprus in the framework of UNFICYP and otherwise". "I am certain that
we will have very good results from this visit", he added. Replying to a press
question on whether Cyprus' relations with Sweden have been restored, President
Christofias said: "I don't think that our relations had been upset to a degree
that they would need to be restored". Moreover, the Vice Minister of Foreign
Affairs of Syria, who will visit Cyprus later this week, will deliver President
Christofias a message from the President of Syria Mr Assad. Mr Christofias said
that the Syrian Chargé d' Affaires had announced the visit to him during their
meeting, adding that during the meeting with the Syrian Vice Minister of Foreign
Affairs they would talk about "various issues of common interest".
