Government Spokesman: Ledra street will open without army
presence
"The Ledra street crossing point will open in the same
framework that the other crossing points have opened and especially without the
presence of the army in this specific point", the Government Spokesman Stefanos
Stefanou stressed yesterday, noting that this provision exists in the Agreement
of 21st March. "The United Nations need to check the area for mines and other
ammunitions that may exist there to guarantee, first of all, the safety of those
who will undertake the restoration of the buildings in the area" he said, and
added: "when the technical work is finished, the Ledra street crossing point
will open. I understand that according to what has been said, a few days will be
needed for the technical work to be completed". Replying to a question regarding
the problems that arose in the opening of Ledra street, Mr Stefanou said that
whatever problems arose had nothing to do with the Greek Cypriot side. "It is
not the Republic of Cyprus or the Greek Cypriot side that has raised them. There
is an agreement for the opening of Ledra street, there is a specific framework
and there are specific provisions. We are waiting for the implementation of the
agreement with the specific provisions it contains. From this point onwards, we
are waiting to see the developments" he concluded.
