The President of the Republic Mr Demetris Christofias
received yesterday, at the Presidential Palace, a delegation of the Turkish
Cypriot United Cyprus Party (BKP). In statements to the press after the meeting,
the General Secretary of the party, Mr Izzet Izcan, inter alia, said: "We had a
fruitful and creative meeting with the President of the Republic. We were
briefed and we exchanged views on the current phase of the Cyprus problem," and
added "we have a common understanding on the issue of the solution of the Cyprus
problem". He noted that his party always supported that the solution must secure
the political equality of the two communities, as outlined in the UN
resolutions, a single sovereignty and a single international identity. Referring
to the meeting between President Christofias and the Turkish Cypriot leader Mr
Mehmet Ali Talat, held on 23 May and the joint communiqué issued after it, he
said that "a positive step was made as regards the territorial integrity of
Cyprus and the political equality of the two communities". Mr Izcan also
mentioned that "with the positive contribution of the two leaders, we need to
achieve positive results. In order to have progress, all of us wishing to have a
solution have a duty to do something". Mr Izcan called on the people of Cyprus
to close their ears to positions which lead to pessimistic scenarios. Finally,
he said that on Thursday, a delegation of his party would have a meeting with Mr
Talat.
