The representative of the President of the
Republic, Presidential Commissioner, Mr George Iacovou and the
representative of the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr Ozdil Nami, gave today
a press conference, at the Ledra Palace hotel in Nicosia, to announce a
series of measures agreed in six Technical Committees. Present at the
press conference was the UN Secretary General's Special Representative
to Cyprus Mr Taye-Brook Zerihoun, who said the following:
"The intention in this joint conference is for Mr Iacovou and Mr Nami
to provide an update of the progress achieved in the Technical
Committees and to announce a set of measures agreed to help ease the
daily life of Cypriots on the island. The measures agreed are in the
areas of Environment, Health, Road Safety and Cultural Heritage.
The Technical Committees and Working Groups have been meeting since
late April and I am told they've had so far over 180 meetings. Some of
the Committees and Working Groups have made more progress than others
but what is important here is that the process remains engaged and on
track. The agreements which will be announced would substantiate that.
There are other measures in the pipeline on which the two sides are
close to agreement and we believe those additional measures could be
announced in the coming days. The momentum of the process has not
slowed. In fact it's producing tangible results. The two
representatives have agreed that the leaders will meet on the 1st of
July in line with their 21 March agreement."
