Opening of Limnitis Crossing Point,
a Priority Says Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou
Nicosia, Aug 28 --- The opening of a crossing point at Limnitis,
on the northwest of Cyprus, is the first priority for the Cypriot
government, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has said.
He added that the opening of the crossing point would
facilitate crossing to and from the Turkish occupied areas, and
would help further improve the climate between the Greek Cypriot and

Presidential Commissioner George
Iacovou Meets Advisor to Leader of the Turkish Cypriot Community
Nicosia, Aug 27 - The aides of the two leaders in Cyprus,
Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou and advisor to the leader
of the Turkish Cypriot community Ozdil Nami, held a meeting
Wednesday during which they discussed procedural matters ahead of
the commencement of direct talks between the leaders of the two
communities in Cyprus on September 3rd. In statements after

Secretary General’s Special Representative in Cyprus Taye–Brook
Zerihoun, Mr. Iacovou said that UN Secretary General’s special

Overseas Cypriots Stress the Need
for Strengthening Enlightenment Efforts
Nicosia, Aug
23 - Overseas Cypriots underlined in Nicosia on Saturday the need
for a stronger enlightenment campaign on the Cyprus issue.
Overseas Cypriots, who held in Nicosia the 22nd Conference
of the Central Council of the World Federation for Overseas Cypriots
(POMAK) and the International Coordinating Committee Justice for
Cyprus (PSEKA), and the 4th Conference of the World Organization for
Young Overseas Cypriots (NEPOMAK), said they were satisfied with the
information they received from the Government of Cyprus about the
recent developments regarding the Cyprus problem, but noted the need

Here Sixth Season Completed for the
Pyla-Koutsopetria Archaeological Project
Nicosia, Aug 27 - The Pyla-Koutsopetria Archaeological Project
has completed its sixth season of fieldwork at the site of
Pyla-Koutsopetria on Cyprus. An official press release
issued here today notes that the project, carried out between May
15th and June 25th 2008 with the help of a team of experts from
universities in the U.S. and Europe, had two goals, the publication
of the finds excavated from a small area of the site by Maria
Hadjicosti during two campaigns in the 1990s and a survey of
archaeological features across the entire 150ha (1,500,000 square

President to Participate in Negotiations with Good
Will
Nicosia, Aug 19 - President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris
Christofias said on Tuesday that the Greek Cypriot side will be
participating in negotiations for a settlement with good will for a
comprehensive, agreed on and mutually acceptable solution, noting
that the Greek Cypriot side will continue to be true to the
principles of a settlement and it will show determination and

Cypriot Olympic
Athletes Return Home
Larnaca, Aug 20 - Cypriot Olympic athletes George Achilleos and
Kyriacos Ioannou returned to Cyprus from Beijing, where they had
participated in the Olympic Games. George Achilleos, who
secured the fifth position in shooting skeet, said he was very
pleased with the result, adding that his childhood dream was to
become an Olympic winner and that he believed he could return from a

Famagusta Municipal Council Adopts Resolution for the
Return of the Town
Larnaca, Aug 19 - The Mayor and the
Municipal Council of the Turkish occupied town of Famagusta have
expressed certainty that President of the Republic Demetris
Christofias will fight for a solution of the Cyprus problem with
determination and consistency. This statement is included in
a resolution calling for the return of Famagusta, under Turkish
occupation since 1974, to its lawful inhabitants. The resolution was
adopted on Saturday by the Famagusta Municipal Council, in a public
meeting at Dherynia Cultural Centre, on the south of this eastern
coastal city, to mark the 34th anniversary since the town was

Here Cyprus Doctors of the World to Hand Over Projects in
Sri Lanka
Nicosia, Aug 21 - The Cyprus division of Doctors of the World
will be handing over to the Sri Lankan authorities next week a
series of projects that have already improved the standard of living
of locals, especially after the December 2004 tsunami and its
consequences. President of the Doctors of the World (Cyprus)
Elias Papadopoulos stated that so far 45 volunteers of the
organization have visited Sri Lanka and that a Cypriot mission was
the first to reach the area that was affected most by the

Cyprus Marks 34th Anniversary of Second Turkish
Invasion
Nicosia, Aug 14 - Cyprus marks the 34th anniversary of Turkey's
second offensive against the island in the summer of 1974 resulting
in the occupation of the island's northern third. It was
August 14 1974 when Ankara's representatives to the Geneva peace
talks at the time refused to give the Greek Cypriot representative
time to consider their proposals and effectively presented Glafcos
Clerides, former President of the Republic, with an

UEFA Champions League: Cypriot
Champions Anorthosis Beat Greece's Olympiacos
Nicosia, Aug 14 - Cypriot soccer champions Anorthosis are just
one game away from becoming the first Cypriot team to qualify for
the UEFA Champions League group stage after beating 3-0 Greek
champions Olympiacos CFP, Wednesday night, in Larnaca.
In
front of 10,000 spectators, Anorthosis, a refugee club from
Famagusta, a town under Turkish occupation since 1974, opened the
score in the 5th minute through an own goal by Vassilis

President Christofias Visits Elementary School in China
Nicosia, Aug 13 - Cyprus President Demetris Christofias
visited the Zhong Xin Yuan Elementary School in China, which is
twinned with a local school in Nicosia. According to an
official announcement, President Christofias said that today he
spent one of the most beautiful days he has spent during his stay in
China.

Cypriot Shooter 7th in Women Skeet at Beijing Olympic
Games
Beijing, Aug 14 - Cypriot athlete in shooting, Andri Eleftheriou,
secured the seventh position in the overall ranking of women skeet
at the Beijing Olympic Games. The 24 year old Cypriot
athlete, who was competing against 19 shooters, came seventh with a

Government Spokesman: Aim of Direct Talks an Honest
Compromise
Nicosia, Aug 2 - Cyprus President Demetris Christofias enters
direct negotiations scheduled to commence September 3, with good
will and readiness to work hard and with an aim to achieve an honest
and reasonable compromise on the Cyprus issue, Government Spokesman
Stefanos Stefanou has stated.
The Cypriot official was
addressing the funeral ceremony of Christophorou Savva Yiatrou, who
was missing since the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, and whose
remains were recently found in a mass grave in the Turkish-occupied

Finance Minister: Cyprus Economy
Developing Well
Nicosia, Aug 7 – Cyprus Finance Minister Charilaos Stavrakis has
said that Cyprus public finances are developing well in spite of the
huge problems which the world economy is facing.

during a press conference, Mr. Stavrakis said the Ministry has
revised its economic growth forecast for 2008 upwards to around 4.0%
on the back of an increase in private demand and foreign

Commission for Children's Rights in Cyprus Launches
Website
Nicosia, Aug 5 - The office of the Commissioner for
Children's Rights in Cyprus has set up a website for visitors to
learn about the institution, the responsibilities of the
Commissioner and the rights of the child. A press release,
issued by the Commissioner for Children's Rights Leda Koursouba,
says that through this website she anticipates to have frequent
contact with children living in Cyprus and hopes to be briefed on
the issues concerning them. She also says that she will take into
account their views on the matters her office deals with.

Prominent Cypriot Journalist Demetris Andreou Passes
Away
Nicosia, Aug 2 – Prominent Cypriot journalist, Demetris Andreou,
died Friday night, at the age of 68. Mr. Andreou was first admitted
to Nicosia General Hospital on July 20 after suffering a stroke
during a live TV talk show. He later suffered a heart attack.
Mr. Andreou studied journalism in France, where he actively
participated in the students' protests and general strike, later
known as “May 1968”. Later on, he worked for a number of French

UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus
Encouraged by Commitment of Leaders for Cyprus Settlement
Nicosia, Jul 29 - Alexander Downer, the UN Secretary General's
Special Adviser on Cyprus, said on Tuesday that he was encouraged by
his talks with the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus,
President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot
leader Mehmet Ali Talat, noting that they are sincere in their
commitment to reach a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus
problem.
Speaking at a press conference in Nicosia during a
brief visit to the island, Mr. Downer noted that developments over
the past months have fostered a genuine sense that prospects have
perhaps never been better to achieve a comprehensive settlement,
adding that there is convergence on quite a number of issues and

US Congressman Supports Decision for
Cyprus Talks
Washington, DC, Jul 31 - US Congressman, Chairman of the
Subcommittee on Europe and senior member of the House Committee on
Foreign Affairs Robert Wexler has expressed his support for the
decision of President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias
and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat to begin negotiations on
September 3 for a solution of the Cyprus problem.

Cabinet Approves Measures for Integration of non Greek
Speaking Pupils
Nicosia, Jul 30 - The Council of
Ministers approved Wednesday the implementation of new measures
aiming at the smooth integration of non Greek speaking children in
the school system of Cyprus. A press release by the Ministry
of Education and Culture says that the Cabinet approved the
launching of a pilot program for the speedy teaching of the Greek
language in secondary education schools. The pilot program will be
implemented in 16 schools with the highest numbers of non Greek
speaking pupils.

Paris, Jul 29 – Cyprus's cultural week as part of the “European
Cultural Month” organized by the French presidency of the EU was
launched on Monday in Paris.
