President Demetris Christofias Determined to Succeed in Solution Effort

Strasbourg, Sep 30 – President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias has urged the UN to press on with an agreement that will abolish annual military exercises in and around Cyprus, adding that he also advocates the disengagement of forces, particularly in the Nicosia region.
In his address to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe on Tuesday, the President revealed that during his recent meeting in New York with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, he suggested that the UN chief promote an agreement to abolish the annual military exercises in and around Cyprus.

Government Spokesman Stefanos Stefanou Expresses Satisfaction with PACE Resolution

Nicosia, Oct 2 - The Government expresses its satisfaction with resolution 1628 of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. The Government Spokesman Mr. Stefanos Stefanou in his statement says, inter alia, that "this resolution constitutes a very important step forward, in relation to the previous resolution 1376 of 2004, which praised the Turkish Cypriot community for its positive stance in the referendum and called on the international community to lift their so-called isolation."
"The new resolution refers to many aspects of the Cyprus problem, with many references that are very satisfactory for the Republic of Cyprus and for the Greek Cypriot community regarding their stance on the Cyprus problem," he added.

Cyprus Celebrates Independence Day

Nicosia, Oct 1 – President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias said in Nicosia Wednesday that the Greek Cypriot side pursues the peaceful reunification of the island on the basis of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation.
He was speaking after the military parade in Nicosia to honor the 48th anniversary of the nation's independence.
President Christofias, flanked by Greek National Defense Minister Evangelos Meimarakis and Cypriot Defense Minister Costas Papacostas, took the salute of the parade, watched by the island's political, military and religious leadership as well as members of the diplomatic corps and thousands of people who waived in pride the Cypriot flag.

Minister of Finance Charilaos Stavrakis: Cyprus Financial System Remains Strong and Robust

Nicosia, Oct 2 - The Cyprus financial system remains strong and robust despite the world financial crisis, said Thursday Minister of Finance Charilaos Stavrakis.
In statements after a board meeting held in the Ministry of Finance on the world financial crisis and its impact on the Cyprus economy, Mr. Stavrakis said that the government has the ability to use, instantly, up to 1.9 billion euro in case there is a financial crisis in Cyprus.

President Christofias Satisfied with Latest Meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Talat

Nicosia, Oct 10 – President Demetris Christofias expressed satisfaction with the outcome of today's meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, which is part of UN-led negotiations to reach a comprehensive mutually acceptable settlement to the protracted Cyprus problem. Speaking to the press on his return to the Presidential Palace after his morning meeting with Mr. Talat, at the UN-controlled Nicosia airport area, he said "I am generally satisfied."

UNSG Special Advisor for Cyprus Alexander Downer Says Latest Meeting Between the Two Leaders Has Been Productive

Nicosia, Oct 10 - The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus, who met Friday in the context of direct negotiations aiming at reaching a solution of the Cyprus problem, discussed the issue of the powers of the federal government and made progress, the top UN envoy on Cyprus said here today. Alexander Downer, UN Secretary General's special adviser for Cyprus, made this statement after today's meeting between President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat. Downer and UNSG's Special Representative in Cyprus Taye-Brook Zerihoun attended the meeting.

President Christofias Concludes Official Visit to Bulgaria

Nicosia, Oct 7 - From the moment the Cyprus problem occurred, Bulgaria has maintained a consistent position, expressed through full support of all relevant UN resolutions which condemn the Turkish invasion and call for full withdrawal of Turkish troops from Cyprus. The above statement was made by the President of Bulgaria Mr. Georgi Parvanov, after the meeting he had on October 6th in Sofia with President Demetris Christofias. Bulgaria's position is that Cyprus must remain an independent, united sovereign state, with sovereignty extended to the whole island, he said. Mr. Parvanov added that he congratulated President Christofias on the resumption of the process and he expressed his support for the negotiations and the hope that they will be fruitful and successful. Bulgaria will support any decision, in the spirit of European values that will be to the benefit of the Cypriot people as a whole, he said further.

Finance Ministry Developing Contingency Plan in the Light of World Crisis

Nicosia, Oct 10 - Minister of Finance Charilaos Stavrakis said today that his Ministry is processing a contingency plan in case the Cypriot economy is adversely affected by the international financial crisis, which he described as ''unprecedented.''
Speaking after a meeting with House of Representatives President Marios Garoyian, Mr. Stavrakis said the crisis may affect Cypriot economy growth rates for the year 2009, noting that the contingency plan may be implemented if the crisis begins to affect Cyprus.

UNSG Special Advisor Alexander Downer Says Latest Meeting was Productive

Nicosia, Oct 13 – In statements after the meeting, UNSG Special Advisor Alexander Downer, stated, "The leaders have asked me on their behalf to say a few words about the meeting they had this morning. The leaders had a productive meeting today. They had a one hour private meeting at the beginning and they have agreed to meet on a weekly basis. Their next meeting will take place next Monday, so just four days' time. Working groups, representatives and experts will meet according to the instructions of the Leaders as needed. The leaders had further discussions today on the powers of the federal government, and they made progress. They also began discussions about the structure of the federal executive. Both sides made proposals and those discussions will continue next Monday."

"Integrating Transport in a Reunified Cyprus" Seminar Now Open in Brussels

Brussels, Oct 15 - A seminar, entitled "Integrating transport in a reunified Cyprus," opened in Brussels on Wednesday and provided a forum for an exchange of views among experts from the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities, the government, scientists and technocrats.
The seminar organized by the Reconstruction and Resettlement Council, under the auspices of the President of the Republic, Demetris Christofias, heard speakers outlining the importance of integration in transport to help efforts to reunite Cyprus, which has been divided since Turkish troops invaded in 1974.

President Christofias satisfied with Conclusions of the European Council

Brussels, Oct 16 – President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias said Thursday he was satisfied with the conclusions of the European Council, which took place in Brussels this week.
Speaking to the press in Brussels, President Christofias referred to three issues included in the conclusions, the financial crisis, illegal immigration and energy.

Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus and Greece Sign Memorandum of Cooperation

Athens, Oct 23 - The Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus and Greece have signed a memorandum of cooperation in order to coordinate their moves as far as overseas Hellenism is concerned. The memorandum was signed in Athens by Director General of the General Secretariat for Overseas Hellenism at the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kyparissides and Director of the Directorate for the Overseas and Repatriated at the Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs Stavros Epaminondas, in the presence of Greek Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Theodoros Kassimis.

President Christofias and Mr. Talat Continue Discussion on the Federal Executive

Nicosia, Oct 22 – Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat continued in Nicosia Wednesday their discussions on the federal executive, in the framework of direct negotiations on the Cyprus question.
In statements after the meeting, UN Secretary General Special Representative in Cyprus Taye Brook Zerihoun said that the leaders began the meeting with about an hour and half of tête-à-tête, and then continued their discussions on the federal executive.

President Christofias Says Solution Must Serve All Cypriots

Nicosia, Oct 25 - The solution of the Cyprus problem must allow all Cypriots to live and work together in an independent and prosperous country within the European Union, without the presence of foreign troops and illegal settlers, in conditions of security where everyone's origin will be respected, President Demetris Christofias has stressed, in his address at Seventh Asia-Europe Meeting in Beijing during a session on "Deepening Dialogue Among Civilizations."
He said that since 1974, the cultural heritage of Cyprus in the northern part of the island, which remains under Turkish military occupation, hasbeen severely damaged.

Foreign Minister Kyprianou Calls on UK and Other Friendly Countries to Act Towards Turkey for the Reunification of Cyprus

London, Oct 30 - Foreign Minister of Cyprus Marcos Kyprianou has expressed restrained optimism over the ongoing talks on Cyprus question, while he called on Britain and other friendly countries to act towards Turkey in order to contribute to the reunification of Cyprus. Foreign Minister Kyprianou was speaking at a dinner hosted Wednesday by the Greek Cypriot Brotherhood in London on the occasion of the 38th anniversary of the Cypriot Independence, which was attended by members of the House of Commons, the European Parliament, the Upper House and journalists.

Cyprus Government Prepares Plan to Avert Possible Problems in the Economy

Nicosia, Oct 29 – The Cypriot government will announce soon an extraordinary action plan comprising short-term and long-term measures with a view to avert possible problems for the economy, in the event of a prolonged global financial crisis, Finance Minister Charilaos Stavrakis said.
Mr. Stavrakis participated today in a meeting, convened by President Demetris Christofias, and attended by Ministers of Labor and Social Securities, Interior, Communications and Works, the Government Spokesman and the Undersecretary to the President, as well as the head of the Planning Bureau, to discuss the international financial crisis and its effects on the Cypriot economy.

Cypriot Women Gather at Ledra Street to Demand Peace and Reunification of Cyprus

Nicosia, Oct 26 - Under the slogan "Now is the time for solution, reunification and peace" Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot women, members of various organizations, trade unions and NGOs, gathered on the National Women's Action Day for Peace at the check point, in Ledra street, in the capital Nicosia to demand peace and the reunification of Cyprus. In a joint declaration, they sent a message of peace to all women in Cyprus and the world at large and called on them to strengthen the global struggle of women for peace in the whole world while they expressed their desire to end conflicts and wars.
