Written statement by the Under Secretary to the President and Deputy Government Spokesman Mr. Titos Christofides
Regarding a warning by the community leader
of Pyrgos, Mr Costas Michaelides, that the villagers of Pyrgos would
close the road leading to Kokkina village on the day the Turkish
Cypriots intended to pass through as a protest for the not opening as
yet of the Limnitis crossing point, we would like to state the
following:
The opening of Limnitis crossing point constitutes an issue of
intensive negotiations between the leaders of the two communities.
Had the Government been inactive on the issue, then such mobilizations
by the residents of the area would have been justified.
However, such actions at this stage are neither wise nor do they
facilitate the opening of the crossing point.
There is a strong possibility that these mobilizations could eventually
lead to greater delays in the overall effort.
