The Peoples' Republic of China will continue to maintain positions of principle and solidarity towards Cyprus
The President of the Republic Mr Demetris
Christofias had a meeting today with the President of the Peoples'
Republic of China Mr Hu Jintao. After the meeting President Christofias
made the following statement: "The President of the Peoples' Republic
of China has warmly welcomed us, describing the President of the
Republic of Cyprus as a good, old friend of the Peoples' Republic of
China. He recalled my latest visit to China as President of the House
of Representatives, which as Mr Jintao said, contributed to the further
enhancement of the multifaceted relations between our counties,
political, economic, cultural, tourist and other. The President of the
Peoples' Republic of China suggested that we work to further enhance
and strengthen relations in all sectors. Mr Jintao stressed that Cyprus
is a very competent partner of the Peoples' Republic of China within
the European Union and expressed the desire to welcome us in his
country during the Europe-Asia High Summit. The Peoples' Republic of
China looks forward to the Republic of Cyprus acting as a bridge in its
relations with the European Union, with which it desires to enlarge its
relations and transform the EU to a competent partner for China.
Regarding the Cyprus issue, the President of the Peoples' Republic of
China expressed clear positions. Over the years, China has been
supporting the Republic of Cyprus in its efforts and its struggle to
defend its independence, its sovereignty and its territorial integrity.
The Chinese President expressed the wish for fruitful results in the
talks for the reunification of the Republic of Cyprus. President Jintao
has stressed that the Peoples' Republic of China will continue to
maintain, in international organisations and especially in the United
Nations Organisation, being a Permanent Member of the UN Security
Council, positions of principle and solidarity towards the Republic of
Cyprus.
