President Christofias: We are aiming for a reunited Republic of Cyprus
We want to clarify, one more time, that
with the solution of the Cyprus problem we are aiming for the creation
of a united federal Republic of Cyprus, which will be a continuation
and a transition of the Republic of Cyprus, which was founded in 1960
as the common state of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. This is
what the President of the Republic Mr Demetris Christofias mentioned,
inter alia, stressing that "our aim is that the solution of the Cyprus
problem will end occupation and colonization, will reunite the people,
the territory, the institutions and the economy of our state". "Our
immovable aim is for the solution to restore and protect the human
rights and the basic freedoms of the people as a whole", he added.
Addressing the opening ceremony of the 22nd Meeting of the Central
Councils of the World Federation of Overseas Cypriots (POMAK) and the
International Coordinating Committee "Justice for Cyprus" (PSEKA) and
of the 4th World Conference of the World Organization for Young
Overseas Cypriots (NEPOMAK), last night, President Christofias referred
to the direct negotiations with the Turkish Cypriot leader Mr Talat,
expressing the hope and the expectation that in the negotiations "we
will face good will and reasonable positions on the part of the other
side, so that we can reach the desirable result, which is a just, under
the circumstances, viable and functional solution of the Cyprus
problem".
