President Christofias: the Republic of Cyprus was and remains a common possession of the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots
"The Republic of Cyprus was and remains a
common possession of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. We peacefully
aim to reunify our country, to rid it from occupation and settlement
and to live free under the roof of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation
with our Turkish Cypriot compatriots with no foreign troops, and
without any other foreign military presence," the President of the
Republic Mr Demetris Christofias stressed yesterday. In statements
after the military parade which took place on the occasion of the 48th
anniversary of the independence and the establishment of the Republic
of Cyprus, President Christofias noted that the aim is to make the
Turkish occupation regime see reason and to understand that the
withdrawal of its forces and a just and viable solution to the Cyprus
problem will be in its interest as well, if it wants to proceed towards
the European Union. "We are fighting consistently, for a democratic
Cyprus in which the human rights of every citizen, regardless of the
language he or she speaks and the God he or she believes in, are
safeguarded", he added.
Asked if there were any developments regarding his proposal for
military de-escalation and the abolition of military exercises,
President Christofias replied: "we are waiting for the response of the
occupation army". -
