President Christofias and T/C leader attend ceremony to launch construction works in Pyrgos-Limnitis
The President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and the Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat attended yesterday the ceremony to mark the launch of construction works for the opening of Kato Pyrgos-Limnitis crossing point. Also present at the ceremony were the UN Secretary-General’s Special Adviser for Cyprus Alexander Downer, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Cyprus Taye Brook Zerihoun, the US Ambassador Frank C. Urbancic and the Deputy Director of the General Affairs and Enlargement Directorate of the European Commission Axel Wallden.
Addressing the ceremony President Christofias said the opening of the crossing point constituted a big step forward for the residents of the area, which would give new impetus to progress and cooperation.
“We have undertaken many and persistent efforts to make this day a reality”, President Christofias noted, adding that the launch of construction works on the Kato Pyrgos-Limnitis road signaled “the final stage for the opening of the crossing point”.
Furthermore, the President said “crossing points and Confidence-Building Measures in general contribute to improving the climate and rapprochement between the two communities”. He pointed out, however, that such measures and actions could not substitute a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem. The attainment of such a settlement, he continued, was what he and Mehmet Ali Talat still aimed for.
