Statements by the Government Spokesman after the Informal Council of Leaders’ Meeting
“Our side is always consistent and will remain consistent with the basis of the negotiations on the Cyprus problem,” the Government Spokesman Mr Stefanos Stefanou stressed yesterday. In statements to the press, after the Informal Council of Leaders’ Meeting, which was convened at the Presidential Palace under the presidency of the President of the Republic Mr Demetris Christofias, Mr Stefanou said: “today was a very constructive meeting of the Informal Leaders’ Council. The President of the Republic briefed the leaders on the recent developments on the Cyprus issue, the political leaders submitted their thoughts and views and there was a very constructive discussion”. Replying to a question on whether at the meeting President Christofias was asked by a political party not to continue the talks on the Cyprus problem, Mr Stefanou said: “On the positions of each party you need to ask each party separately. Our position is very clear regarding the basis. The basis is very clear, and we ask that the positions, which the two sides submit to the negotiating table, be evaluated on this basis. We always remain consistent with the goal for a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, for one state with a single sovereignty, a single citizenship and a single international personality, which is also the basis of the negotiation, and we ask the other side to do the same”.
