President Christofias and Mr. Talat Will Try
to Conclude Discussions on External Relations During Their Next Meeting on
January 16th

Dec 22 - The leaders of the two communities in Cyprus will try to conclude
the discussions on the external relations, within the framework of the
direct negotiations, during their next meeting on January 16, 2009,
Cyprus's President Demetris Christofias has said.
In statements Monday arriving at the Presidential Palace after his 13th
meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, in the framework of
the direct talks, President Christofias said that during the meeting the
Greek Cypriot side gave answers to the positions put forward by the Turkish
Cypriot side during their previous meeting on December 16th.

UN Secretary-General's Special Advisor Downer Says Timetables
for Cyprus Talks Not a Wise Idea

Dec 19 - UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer
believes that it would not be wise to put a timetable before the leaders of
the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities with regard to the
conclusion of the talks they are engaged in.
Speaking in Athens after a meeting with Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyiannis,
he also said that the Greek and the Turkish governments are encouraging the
leaders of the two communities in Cyprus towards reaching a solution of the
problem.

Welcomes Security Council Resolution on UNFICYP

Nations, Dec 13 - Cyprus has described as balanced a Security Council
resolution, renewing the mandate of the UN peace-keeping force on the
island, and said that it was satisfied as the resolution clarified
unequivocally that the Cyprus solution must be based on a bizonal
bicommunal federation, with political equality as prescribed in Council
resolutions.
Britain's Permanent Representative talked about progress in the ongoing
UN-led negotiations between the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot
communities, but also called for the intensification of the peace process.

Government Aims to Maintain High Growth Rate
in 2009
Nicosia,
Dec 19 – The Cyprus government, amid the global financial crisis, aims to
maintain the highest possible growth rate and to minimize pressures on
employment in 2009, Minister of Finance Charilaos Stavrakis said in Nicosia
Friday.
Mr. Stvrakis was speaking to the press after the approval by the House of
Representatives of the 2009 state budget Thursday night. The budget was
approved by 33 votes in favor and 20 votes against. It provides for 8.26
billion euros in expenditure, and revenues worth 6.87 billion euros. The
budget deficit is 1,390 million euros.

Cyprus solution possible in 2009 if Turkey shows good will says President Christofias
Athens,
Nov 28 - Cyprus President Demetris Christofias said on Friday that he was
fully satisfied with the results of his official visit to Athens.
"The convergence of views regarding the Cyprus problem and the policy to be
followed with a view to reaching a just and viable solution to the problem
as soon as possible was reconfirmed," President Christofias told a press
conference at the Union of Foreign Press Correspondents in Greece.

Turkey Demonstrates Aggressive Behavior towards Cyprus

Nations, Nov 22 - Cyprus President Demetris Christofias has sent a letter
to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemning Turkish obstructions against
an exploratory survey conducted by Cyprus within its exclusive economic
zone (EEZ).
On November 13th, two ships under foreign flag that were conducting an
exploratory survey on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus within its EEZ, 27
miles off the south coast of the island were forced by a Turkish warship to
cease their operations and withdraw within the territorial waters of the
Republic of Cyprus, under fear for the lives of their crews and the
integrity of the ships.

"Recent
Archaeological Discoveries in Cyprus" – an illustrated presentation by
Director of CAARI Dr. Thomas Davis
Washington, Nov 24 - The
Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus and the Cyprus American Archaeological
Research Institute (CAARI), hosted on November 24, 2008, at the Embassy of
the Republic of Cyprus in Washington, DC, an illustrated presentation by
the Director of CAARI Dr. Thomas Davis on the Recent Archaeological
Discoveries in Cyprus.
Ambassador Kakouris in his opening remarks, made a brief introduction to
Cyprus' over 10,000 year old history, as "one of the oldest recorded in the
world", and to the longstanding and close cooperation in the field of
archaeology with the US in general and CAARI in particular. "At present",
the Ambassador noted, "nearly 50% of the excavation licenses of foreign
archaeological expeditions on the island are held by American academic
institutions."

Finance Minister Says Cyprus's Economy is Much Better Than the
Rest of the EU

Nov 27 - Cyprus Finance Minister Charilaos Stavrakis reiterated here
Thursday that Cyprus's economy is fairing ''much better'' than that of
other European Union member states, noting that the government has drafted
plans to tackle negative effects from the global financial crisis.
Mr. Stavrakis discussed today with EU ambassadors to Cyprus the prospects
for the Cypriot economy, in the wake of the global financial crisis, while
special reference was made to the 200 billion euro economic recovery plan
announced yesterday by the EU Commission President.

11th Meeting Took Place Between President Christofias and T/C
Leader Talat
Nicosia,
Dec 2 – The 11th meeting between President Christofias and Turkish Cypriot
leader Mehmet Ali Talat, in the framework of the direct negotiations, with
a view to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem, took place on Monday.
President Christofias and Mr. Talat continued their discussion on federal
police issues. Other issues on the agenda were federal public service,
public service commission and external affairs.

Advisors to Community Leaders Codify
Positions
Nicosia,
Dec 3 - George Iacovou and Ozdil Nami, aides of Cyprus President Demetris
Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat respectively,
codified today the convergences and divergences between the two sides on
issues discussed by the two community leaders at the UN-led negotiations.
Mr. Iacovou and Mr. Nami met today solely to record the views and positions
submitted by the two sides on governance. Their next meeting is scheduled
for December 10th.

Cypriot Finance Minister Presents 2009 Budget

Dec 4 - Cypriot Finance Minister Charilaos Stavrakis presented on Thursday
to the House of Representatives the 2009 state budget, ahead of a
"difficult year" in the wake of a prolonged global financial crisis.
"Given the current situation, 2009 is projected to be a financially
difficult year due to the international economic slowdown and the financial
crisis," said Mr. Stavrakis, noting however that the Cypriot economy is
projected to grow by 3 percent.

President Christofias Will Continue Efforts for Cyprus

Dec 31 - President Demetris Christofias has assured the people of Cyprus
that he will continue to strive with determination for a political
settlement, in line with UN resolutions and European law, and has called on
the Turkish Cypriot leadership to continue and intensify efforts for a
solution, with goodwill and mutual understanding.
In a message to the people of Cyprus for the new year, President
Christofias said that his first wish is for 2009 to be the year of the
solution of the Cyprus problem, the termination of the Turkish occupation
and colonization, the reunification of the island and its people, in the
framework of a unified bizonal bicommunal federal Republic of Cyprus.

President Christofias Expresses Hope in Identifying All
remains of Missing Persons in 2009

Dec 29 - President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias expressed
hope on Monday that all remains of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot
missing persons would be identified in 2009, noting that this was owed to
the families of missing persons from both communities.
Speaking after a visit to the laboratory of the Committee on Missing
Persons in Cyprus (CMP), President Christofias said that the procedure
carried out at the laboratory was "a positive and important step to ease,
to the extent possible, the ordeal of the families," noting that what is
left is to determine the causes.

Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou Announces Cyprus's Donation of Financial Aid
to Gaza

Dec 31 - The Council of Ministers has decided to donate financial aid
amounting to 150,000 euro for the Gaza Strip, Government Spokesman
Stephanos Stephanou announced in Nicosia Wednesday after a Cabinet meeting,
reiterating his call for an end to Israeli attacks which cause hundreds of
victims and make the prospect of peace even more distant.
"The Foreign Ministry continues to monitor developments after the boat,
carrying humanitarian and medical aid, with volunteers from 'Volunteer
Doctors – Cyprus' organization, was hit by the Israeli navy," he said.

Central Bank Governor Says Euro Shields

Dec 31 - Cyprus's accession to the euro-area acts as a protection shield
against the fallout of the current international financial crisis, the
Governor of the Central Bank Athanasios Orphanides believes.
In a message, to mark one year since joining the euro, he said the EU
currency, which Cyprus adopted as its legal tender on January 1, 2008,
provides long-term opportunities and acts as a springboard for the right
use of new prospects which open up further progress and development.
